Seven roads to be paved in year beginning in October

A list of Warren County roads to be paved in fiscal 2013 has been pared to seven to fit next year’s budget and there are more complex plans for two in poor condition, county engineer John McKee said.

Parts of Boy Scout, Tiffintown, Dana and Gowall roads and Estelle, Redbud and Shadow Wood drives were approved by supervisors by engineers’ request Monday. Cost estimates are $1,064,600, according to a road ratings roster issued to the county last week, slightly above the $1.035 million budgeted for routine road surface improvements.

Bell Bottom Road, off Mississippi 3, rated worst among minor roads, has “landslide problems” that would complicate paving this year, McKee said. Logue Circle, near Vicksburg National Military Park’s north end, will be rearranged in the future and wasn’t worth considering, McKee said.

About three-tenths of a mile of Boy Scout Road, between Culkin and Oak Ridge roads, was added at the request of District 1 Supervisor John Arnold last week and would address the road’s worst section.

Since the late 1980s, roads have been rated on a 100-point scale using average daily traffic load and the degree of buckling or cracking since the last report. Minor improvements during a given year, such as patching a pothole, can improve a rating. The last report was compiled in May 2010, with 134 roads evaluated that year. Four minor roads on Monday’s list of approvals rated a 56, while major thoroughfares Dana and Tiffintown rated a 59.

Fiscal Year 2013 begins Oct. 1.
