A Vicksburg native has received a congressional commendation for service during and after his 33-year military career.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Charles Scott Sr., 83, received the recognition in December in a statement from U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Bolton.

Scott joined the Army on Nov. 27, 1950, and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his last five years of service, he was adviser to the U.S. Army Reserves in South Mississippi. He retired from the military in 1983.
