A torch relay that’s part of the 25th World Harmony Run will hit Vicksburg Sunday, arriving at 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center of the Vicksburg National Military Park, 3201 Clay St.
The World Harmony Run, held annually since 1987, features relays in 100 nations in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Since its inception, more than five million people have participated, with endorsements from such leaders as Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa and government officials.
The run was organized by visionary Sri Chinmoy, an athlete, philosopher, artist, musician and poet, as a way for citizens to give dynamic expression to their hopes for world harmony.
Sunday’s ceremony will include park ranger Tim Kavanaugh receiving the torch, and local fitness boosters Shape Up Sisters and Shape Up Vicksburg being honored by the WHR running team.
The U.S. portion of the relay, which will include an estimated 50,000 children in 1,000 cities and towns, will wrap up in New York City in August.
