Week in Vicksburg

A cool front swept through Vicksburg early in the week, managing to lower temperatures and dump more than an inch of rain. High temps tumbled from the upper 70s into the mid-50s during the week. Lows slipped from the 50s into the low 30s.

The Mississippi River inched up to 9.3 feet before backing down to 7.3 on the local gauge. Another decrease was expected, as forecasters predicted a reading of 6.3 feet for today.

The Southern Heritage Air Foundation Museum opened its doors at Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport, offering visitors a glimpse of aviation past. The bulk of the memorabilia is World War II-related, and museum officials say their goal is to teach younger generations about the efforts of World War II pilots.

Renovations at Atwood Chevrolet on North Frontage Road have been completed, and a third generation is learning the ropes at the family-owned business. Justin Atwood, 19, is a GM-certified technology expert and is pursuing additional business education in college. He assists his father, Alan, who joined the company in 1984 under his own father, Emmett, who began the tradition in 1958.

Randy Sherard was named recipient of the 2012 Library Champion Award in recognition of his volunteer service by the Mississippi Library Association. Sherard is attorney for the association and is an ex-officio member of the Warren County-Vicksburg Public Library Advisory Board.

Local events to honor veterans included a wreath-laying ceremony, parade, lunch and a special program at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Convention officials estimated 800 people, including 300 veterans, attended the area’s celebrations.

A yearslong federal case involving the use of Paw Paw Road access to hunting property off Mississippi 465 was ended in a confidential settlement under U.S. Judge David C. Bramlette. The case involved two landowner groups and past and present Vicksburg and Warren County officials. Attorneys said the county, nor any individuals, was out any money as a result of the settlement.

Linda Herrod was presented the 2012 Retiree of the Year award by the Retired Education Personnel Vicksburg Warren County. She retired as principal of South Park Elementary in 2006.

A fawn crashed through the window of Gore’s Hardware on Openwood Street, but fled west after shattering the storefront of the unopened business. Wildlife officials warned that loss of natural habitat, along with hunting season, will continue to drive deer into the city as they look for serenity.

Gov. Phil Bryant accompanied Patrick House, winner of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” as House kicked off his Lean on Me campaign for the Vicksburg Warren School District. The two made an appearance at Warren Central Intermediate to promote the program.

Skipper Guizerix, Dean Anderson and Remy Massey were elected to fill vacant slots on the Main Street Board of Directors. Guizerix, an investment banker at Trustmark, is president of the Vicksburg Convention Center Board of Directors; Anderson co-owns Shiers Communications Specialists and serves on the Riverfest Board of Directors; and Massey is a broker for Coldwell Baker, co-owns Revolution Enterprises and serves as president of the Vicksburg-Warren County Board of Realtors.

NRoute Transportation Commission is one of seven boards with either unfilled vacancies or members with expired terms, a handicap facing City Board. Other key vacancies are on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, Transportation Commission and Board of Architectural Review.

Local deaths during the week were Ann S. Nassour, Mildred Duffey Ryan, Kathryn “Kathy” Hall, Marjorie Mims Rucker, Kenneth L. “Kenny” Thomas, Anise Greene, James H. Stubbs Sr., Augusta “Pockets” Brown and Billy Wayne Franklin.
