March educational programs offer something for everyone

Need more inspiration to work on your home garden this spring? There are lots of upcoming programs and events to get you in the mood.
Some are free, others require a fee and preregistration to attend and many have websites with more information to entice you to attend. Call a friend and take time out of your regular schedule to broaden your horizons.
• Mondays in March Green Thumb Series – Home gardening programs presented by Vicksburg Master Gardeners and invited guests will be at the Warren County Extension Office from 5:30-7 p.m.: This Monday —“Bats: Winged Wonders of the Night” by Chester Martin, ERDC Retired Wildlife Biologist; March 12 — “Yard and Garden as Bird Habitat by Terri Jacobson, Wildlife Biologist and Outreach Specialist with US Fish and Wildlife Service; March 19 — “Top Bar Hives for Minimalist Beekeeping” by Barry Payne, ERDC Retired Invertebrate Physiological Ecologist; March 26 – “Garden Art: Bottle Trees and More” by Stephanie Dwyer, Metal Artist. These programs are free and open to the public.
• Plants of the Bible — On Tuesday, the Biedenharn Bible Museum in Monroe, will host “Plants of the Bible” by Executive Director Ralph Calhoun at noon and 6 p.m. Admission is free and there are no reservations required.
• Camden Daffodil Festival — The Camden Daffodil Festival will be in Camden, Ark., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. There will be bus tours of three private daffodil gardens, the McCollum-Chidester House museum and other Civil War era homes. There will also be arts and crafts, an antique car show, quilt show and steak cook-off. Call 870-836-6426 or visit www.camdenfestival.com for more information.
• Jackson Garden and Patio Show — The Jackson Garden and Patio Show is Friday, March 16 through Sunday, March 18 at the Mississippi Trade Mart in Jackson. The show is sponsored by the Mississippi Nursery Association and will feature educational presentations, plants, containers and garden accessories from retail vendors, soil testing and garden equipment. A schedule of seminars is available at www: msnla.org. The events are Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult.
• New Albany Master Gardener’s Home and Garden Show — The New Albany Master Gardener’s Home and Garden Show is Friday, March 30 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, March 31, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Union County Fairgrounds. Featured speakers include: Patty Roper of Mississippi Magazine, author and radio host Felder Rushing, MSU State Horticulture Specialist Dr. Lelia Kelly, native plant expert Gail Barton, hydrangea specialist Linda Lanier and a host of others. • The Jean Chisholm Lindsey Lecture in Landscape Design — The Jean Chisholm Lindsey Lecture in Landscape Design is Saturday, March 31 at noon at the Mississippi Museum of Art. Speakers are Susan Haltom and Jane Roy Brown, authors of “One Writer’s Garden, Eudora Welty Home Place.” Tickets are $60 and include lunch, lecture and a tour of the Eudora Welty Garden. • Spring plant sale — There will be a spring plant sale at the Crosby Arboretum greenhouse 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 7 and Sunday April 8.
• Garden Clubs of Jackson Home and Garden Tour — The Garden Clubs of Jackson host their annual Home and Garden Tour Thursday, April 12 and Friday, April 13, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets are $20 with lunch available for an additional $15 with required reservation. There will be a bonus tour of Charlott McNeel’s Garden with Nashville’s TV Host and noted garden designer, Troy Marden, on Thursday, April 12, from 4-6 p.m. for $50 per person. • Piney Hills Master Gardeners Garden Tours and Plant Sale — The Piney Hills Master Gardeners host their Garden Tours and Plant Sale Saturday, April 14 in Minden La. that includes four gardens. Biedenharn Garden Symposium — The Biedenharn Garden Symposium is Tuesday, April 17, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. featuring floral designer John Grady Burns, Brooks Garcia and Neil Odenwald. Lectures, lunch and refreshments are $60. Call 318-387-5281 to register.
• Garden Expo — A garden expo will be held at the Natchez Community Center, 215 Franklin St., Wednesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 3, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. There will also be a Southern Region Master Gardeners Conference. The event is free and open to the public.
• The Gardens of Madison County — Madison Ridgeland Academy will host its annual Gardens of Madison County event Friday, May 4 through Sunday, May 6. The event will feature eight unique gardens enhanced with tablescapes. Tickets are $15, $10 for senior citizens and $12 in advance with group rates available. • Wister Gardens Workshop — The Wister Gardens Workshop is Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Belzoni.
