Mississippi State is one win away from its first berth in the SEC championship game since 2005.
Matthew Britton singled home Mitch Slauter in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting Mississippi State past LSU 4-3 in an elimination game at the SEC Baseball Tournament on Friday.
The Bulldogs will play Kentucky today at noon for a berth in the SEC title game.
LSU led 3-0 most of the way before the Bulldogs rallied with a run in the eighth and tied the contest with two more in the ninth.
MSU’s Luis Pollorena drove in the game-tying run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly in only his fourth at-bat of the season. It was the first RBI of his career. He had entered the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning.
Nick Goody of LSU looked to earn his 11th save of the season, but Mississippi State went for two in the ninth as Goody was charged with his second blown save of the year. It is his second blown save in the last three opportunities after starting the year 9-for-9.
“Our kids stayed with it and showed great fortitude,” Mississippi State coach John Cohen said. “Nobody in that dugout was going to give up. When you get behind 3-0 against a very good ballclub it is easy to say, ‘Well, we have regionals next week, and we played well down the stretch.’ These kids did not have that attitude. They wanted to win the baseball game.
“They did whatever it took. When you are playing so many games, you have to really look in their eyes and ask if they want to do it. Every one of these guys wants to do it. We are really proud of these guys. It is a great effort on their part.”
Ryan Eades of LSU put together one of his best outings of his season as he went six complete innings while giving up no runs off four hits. But he did not factor in the decision.
Jonathan Holder got the win, pitching an inning of scoreless relief.
Caleb Reed and Ross Mitchell combined for 41⁄3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter Jacob Lindgren, who lasted just 42⁄3 innings and gave up three runs.
