St. Aloysius falls short of playoffs

There was no joy in Mudville. Mighty St. Al is out of the playoff picture.
Victoria Casher scored two goals, Reilly Reeves had a goal and two assists, and Madison-St. Joseph routed St. Aloysius 6-0 on Tuesday night.
The loss all but eliminated St. Al (12-6, 1-3 Division 5-1A-2A-3A), which reached the state semifinals each of the last two seasons, from playoff contention. It is still mathematically alive, but would need to beat St. Andrew’s by three goals in the season finale on Jan. 20, have several other results fall in its favor, and then hope the tiebreaker math works out.
St. Andrew’s, which currently sits atop Division 5, beat St. Al 3-0 in their first meeting on Dec. 6.
“We’re right there every time. They play hard. They work hard,” St. Al coach Suzie Channell said. “It’s tough. Just keep working at it, and hopefully next year we’ll have another shot at it.”
Steady rain Monday and Tuesday turned Balzli Field into a mud pit. The Lady Flashes hoped it would negate some of St. Joe’s speed advantage and perhaps even lead to a few lucky breaks.
The conditions had the opposite effect.
Less than eight minutes into the game, a clearing attempt in front of St. Al’s goal was slowed by the mud and set up perfectly for St. Joe freshman Jenna Bednarzyk. She calmly lofted a shot over the head of St. Al keeper Alexa Baldizon for a 1-0 lead.
Then, in a five-minute flurry later in the half, the Lady Bruins (6-3-2, 3-0) took command. Reeves’ corner kick was deflected by Baldizon, but went right to St. Joe’s Olivia Barcellona, who knocked it into the net for a 2-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Ninety seconds later, Casher scored her first goal on a breakaway. Casher scored again in the 26th minute, off an assist from Joanna Bellen, for St. Joe’s third goal in less than five minutes and a 4-0 lead.
“I guess we had our Wheaties this morning,” Casher said with a smile. “We’ve just been practicing hard, and I guess something clicked for us. I wish I knew what it was. I wish it clicked every game.”
St. Al held the Lady Bruins out of the net the rest of the half, and picked up the offensive intensity in the second, but couldn’t make a game of it or even crack the scoreboard. Riley Griffith’s shot was knocked away with a diving save by St. Joe’s keeper early in the half, and a handful of shots the rest of the way proved easier to stop.
Reeves and MariMac Collins added goals for St. Joe in the 17th and 33rd minute, respectively, to put the capper on the victory.
Madison-St. Joe completed a sweep of St. Al in the boys’ game with an 8-0 victory.
