St. Al duo, McCarley earn All-State honors

Two St. Aloysius runners earned All-State honors, and the Flashes finished fifth in the team standings at Saturday’s MHSAA Class 1A boys state cross country meet.

Sophomore Jacob Breeden edged teammate Mack Davidson for seventh place and bragging rights as St. Al’s top runner. Breeden completed the 5K course at Clinton’s Choctaw Trails in 18:58. Davidson crossed the finish line in 19:04.1, holding off Tupelo Christian Prep’s Zach Pitts by four-tenths of a second for eighth place.

The top 14 runners in each class make the All-State team.

St. Al’s next-best runner was Luke Eckstein, who finished 28th.

French Camp senior Trevor Wilkerson won the Class 1A championship in 17:39, and French Camp also won the team title.

In the Class 1A girls’ meet, Myrtle’s Kitana High won the inidividual title and Tupelo Christian Prep the team title. Mary Hannah Campbell finished 46th to rank as St. Al’s best runner.

In the Class 6A girls meet, Warren Central’s K.K. McCarley completed the 4-kilometer race in 16:02.2 to finish seventh and take All-State honors.

WC’s Hannah Register finished 42nd and Caitlin Case was 43rd out of 142 runners. The Lady Vikes were 12th in the team standings.

Madison Central’s Rebecca Buteau won the individual title in 15:04.5. Ocean Springs had four runners in the top 10 and took the team championship.

Stephen Wagner was WC’s best runner in the Class 6A boys meet, finishing 26th.
