River City Rescue Mission received the go-ahead Tuesday to begin work on a proposed expansion.

The Vicksburg Board of Zoning Appeals granted parking variances for the mission, reducing off-street parking requirements for a new residence from 19 to 13, and granted another variance for a temporary gravel parking lot for the new building, with the condition that the lot be paved within a year.

“Our clients do not have vehicles,” Earnie Hall, River City executive director, said in requesting the parking space variances at the mission at 2705 Washington St. Only one of 44 residents has a car, he said.

“The other vehicles parked at the mission are to pick up donations and church buses,” he said.

He said the new 12-bed building is necessary because of an increase in people staying at the mission.

In another matter, the board renewed a special exception to allow Golding Barge Line to keep two double-wide trailers on its property at 101 Lee St.

The board in 2008 granted Golding a two-year special exception on the trailers, but the company failed to renew it in 2010.

Austin Golding, marketing, sales and customer service manager for Golding, said the company is expanding its business, adding the business expects the growth to bring 50 new jobs to the area.

The trailers, he said, will serve as temporary offices until the company can build a new office on the property. Construction is expected to begin in the next 13 to 14 months, he said.
