A hometown hero helped the Mississippi Braves achieve their first bonafide winning streak in two months.
Brandon native Brent Leach pitched 41⁄3 innings of shutout ball Saturday night as the M-Braves completed a doubleheader sweep of the Birmingham Barons with a 3-1 victory at Trustmark Park.
The M-Braves took game one, 5-4, and have now won three games in a row for just the second time this season. The last time they did it was May 7-9, when they won three straight against Pensacola.
Leach didn’t allow a hit. He walked three batters and struck out five, but didn’t pitch long enough to get a decision. Andrew Russell finished the fifth inning and got the win.
Jose Martinez singled with one out in the sixth to break up the no-hit bid.
Joe Leonard hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to account for all of Mississippi’s runs.
In the first game, Birmingham scored three times in the sixth before the M-Braves rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Leonard was the hitting hero again, delivering a two-out, two-run single to tie it. Leonard then scored the go-ahead run on a double by Ian Gac.
The teams will take today off before completing their three-game series Monday night at 7 at Trustmark Park. Former major leaguer Ben Sheets will pitch for the M-Braves.
