By any objective measure, the Vicksburg Stars’ rally for a 14-10 over the Clinton Arrows in the 11-year-olds’ Governor’s Cup was epic.
The Stars mounted a 13-run run, two-out rally to pull out a victory in two time-limited innings in the pool play opener for both teams on Friday.
Stars’ coach Timmy Lampkin was amazed at the second-inning comeback that featured seven hits, seven walks, three wild pitches and one error.
“That was the longest second inning I’ve ever been a part of,” Lampkin said. “That second inning lasted longer than most games, I think. It was timely hitting in the second inning after we didn’t do anything in the first inning. The boys battled and did a good job.”
The Stars, after playing to a 1-1 tie after one inning, faced a deep deficit after the top half of the second inning. The Arrows were keyed by a RBI double by Tarique Bettea and two-RBI singles by John Anthony Middleton and Jett Plumer as they put eight runs on the board for a 9-1 lead.
In the second, Clinton’s Robbie Cummins walked two and gave up a wild pitch, but got two outs via strikeouts before giving way to Noah Bullock with the bases loaded. He was greeted on his second pitch with a RBI single over first base by Graham Tweedle.
Clinton’s fans kept asking for “just one more” as in one more out, but it would be an entreaty that wouldn’t be answered.
The bases were later cleared by Sean Simpson, who ripped a RBI double to center to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Bullock walked three straight to load the bases again before giving way to Will Duke, who gave up a game-tying two-RBI double to Taylor Lampkin.
Kyle Guider, Wade Pickard and Ryan Theriot put the Stars ahead with an RBI single apiece. The Arrows finally put the final out on the board as Duke made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.
The Arrows scored one in the top of the third, but the time limit ended the game before the Stars could bat again. Guider earned the win as the Stars in one inning of work.
