Warren Central clinched a playoff berth in the Class 6A team draw with a 7-0 win over rival Vicksburg Friday afternoon at the Halls Ferry Tennis Courts.

The Vikings (7-4) won five of the matches with ease, but two — mixed doubles and girls singles — were competitive.

Warren Central’s Ashley Porter had to go to a first-set tiebreaker to get a setup on Vicksburg’s Tara Rowell in the last match of the day. Porter won the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the first set, 7-6. She later wore down Rowell into some unforced errors to claim the final set, 6-2.

The Vikings have high hopes for their mixed doubles team of senior Jalen Dagher and freshman Elizabeth Wooten. The pair took on the Gators — who won the Class 6A title the past two years behind Christine Figueroa.

Dagher is glad Figueroa is now a freshman at Mississippi State and no longer prowling the Halls Ferry Courts.

“Christine was a great player, winning mixed doubles the last two years, but it feels good to know she’s in college,” Dagher said. “We’ve had a very good season. We beat Clinton Thursday, and now, we’ve just got to hope we get a good draw at state. We didn’t get one last year with Tupelo.”

Dagher and Wooten downed the Gators’ Charlene Figueroa and Chris Green 7-5, 6-1 in mixed doubles on Friday. Dagher said the Vikings have succeeded with a different team makeup.

“We’ve don’t have the exchange students like we had last year, but our younger players, like Elizabeth, have stepped up to the plate,” Dagher said.

Vikings coach Paige Pratt agreed.

“We’ve had a good season behind Jalen, our senior, and we’ve had others step up,” Pratt said. “Today was a very important match for us, because we got the No. 2 seed from our division and we get to advance to playoffs and play another team from the North.”

The Vikings have been very good in boys singles behind Parin Bhitka, who romped past Vicksburg’s Jared Bell 6-1, 6-0.

The No. 1 WC boys doubles team of Robert Rhett and Jesse Tillotson did not lose a game, beating Daniel Sluis and Will Robbins 6-0, 6-0.

The same was true in both girls doubles matches. WC’s Rachel Rhett and Katie Humphries beat Rani Robinson and Olivia White 6-0, 6-0 in No.1 while Claire Kendall and Kaylee Kilgo downed Caroline Williams and Amy White, 6-0, 6-0.

Rounding out the scores was WC’s No. 2 boys team of Baxter Richardson and Sherman Stuart, who beat Vicksburg’s Mason and Walter Boyd 6-0, 6-1.
