USM has one last shot to avoid football infamy

Southern Miss isn’t playing for bowls, or a winning season today. At this point, pride might even be a bit of a stretch.
The Golden Eagles are chasing history — or, rather, trying to stay a step ahead of it.
No Southern Miss team has gone winless since 1925. This year’s squad has one last chance to avoid that fate, when it plays at Memphis today in the finale of a lost season.
The Golden Eagles, last season’s Conference USA champions, are the only winless team in the Football Bowl Subdivision this year. They rank last in C-USA in scoring offense and passing offense, and are giving up 37.5 points per game on defense.
