Car tag of Vicksburg is planned for 2013

The Siege of Vicksburg will be displayed on the second of five license plates offered by Mississippi to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the War Between the States.

A design of the city will grace the tag for 2013, the 150th anniversary of the 47-day siege that concluded the Vicksburg Campaign, aimed at gaining control of the fortress city on the Mississippi River.

The siege ended July 4, 1863, with Union forces led by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, defeating Confederate forces led by Lt. Gen. John C. Pemberton.

The tags are sponsored by the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

This year’s plate will feature Beauvoir, Jefferson Davis’ last home, in Biloxi. Next in the series include a Battle of Corinth design for 2012, a Gen. Nathan B. Forrest design for 2014 and a Confederate veterans tribute in 2015.

Revenues collected on the SCV plates go to preserving original Confederate battle flags in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and to the continuing restoration of Beauvoir, damaged heavily in Hurricane Katrina.

Groups authorized for novelty tags typically come up with the featured designs.

The design for the Vicksburg plate will be chosen by the SCV.
