The Ashmead Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated their 78th anniversary this month.
The occasion was marked during the group’s December meeting, held at Linden Plantation Gardens.
Flag and constitution certificates were presented to members, and new members, including Linden owner Joy Brabston, were welcomed. Linden received the 2008 National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution Conservation Award.
The DAR is a service organization that advocates historic preservation, education and patriotism.
This year, the local chapter saw 18 new members. It has more than 90 from Warren County and Madison Parish.
Resolutions subject of Extension seminar
The Warren County Extension Office is offering a Quick Bites Interactive Video Seminar called New Year’s Resolutions: Budget Solutions (Be Financially Healthy, Wealthy and Wise in 2010).
The free event, offered by the Mississippi State University Extension Service, will be from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 7.

Poverty Point to recycle trees
Poverty Point State Historic Site will recycle live Christmas trees through Jan. 10.
Trees, with all decorations removed, may be dropped off at a recycling station six miles from the park, at 120 Maple St., Epps, La., next to the Epps police station.
The trees will be turned into mulch and used to landscape the park, which is located east of Monroe on Louisiana 577.

Jackson Zoo seeking name for new giraffe
The Jackson Zoo has a new baby giraffe and is seeking help naming it.
Entries for the Name the Giraffe contest will be taken through Thursday for a $1. The winner will be announced New Year’s Day and will receive a free family zoo membership.

MSO to kick off 2010 with show
The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present Mozart by Candlelight Jan. 9 as part of the Intimate Classics Chamber Series.
The performance, conducted by Crafton Beck, will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Belhaven University Center for the Arts in Jackson.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for ages 4-18, and are available at msorchestra.com and 601-960-1565 or at the MSO box office, 201 E. Pascagoula St., an hour before show time.
