412th soldiers set to deploy

About 800 soldiers, including some from Vicksburg, will be honored during departure ceremony Monday in Fort McCoy, Wis.

The soldiers are assigned to the 844th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command, and are headed to Iraq to work on construction projects. The 412th’s headquarters is on Porters Chapel Road in Vicksburg. Maj. Gen. Paul Hamm, commander of the reserve group, will speak at the ceremony.

The 412th, formed in 1923 as the 372nd Engineers, was designated the 412th Engineer Brigade in 1949 and became the 412th Engineer Command in 1971. The 412th has three brigades and 96 other assigned units under its command, comprising approximately 10,000 soldiers throughout the southern and northeastern United States. It has been based in Vicksburg since 1949.
