Arraignments began Friday for defendants indicted by the Warren County Grand Jury, with Judge M. James Chaney presiding and explaining the formal charges to each defendant, a process that will continue next week.
Not among the initial group was Charles Jones, former Vicksburg Housing Authority maintenance supervisor Charles Jones who is being prosecuted on a charge of embezzlement in addition to his pending trial on cocaine trafficking charges. He may be in court Monday.
In a second high-profile case, the armed robbery charges against former Warren Central High School basketball star Sha’Kayla Caples was continued until the January 2010 term, District Attorney Ricky Smith said. Officials were awaiting additional evidence in her case.
Jones is accused in taking thousands of dollars of equipment from the VHA. His drug trafficking trial is set for Nov. 30.
The panel of 19 grand jurors was sworn in Monday by Chaney. They reviewed evidence in 98 cases against 118 individuals, returning indictments in 79 of the cases. Twelve defendants in 12 cases were no-billed, meaning the evidence was insufficient to pursue prosecution.
The grand jury also toured the Warren County Jail and reviewed various aspects of law enforcement in the city and county.
Indictments are not released until arraignment has taken place.
