Practice makes perfect

Firefighters spray water to simulate cooling refinery tanks during a fire training exercise Wednesday at Hunt Southland Refining Co. on Dorsey Street. Officials from the Vicksburg Police Department and Ergon Refining Inc. were also on site with about 50 others for the drill simulating an oil and gas refinery fire. Resources change all the time, Vicksburg Fire Department Deputy Chief Rose Shaifer said, and new products are introduced so training must be kept up-to-date. The foam trailer taken to the drill by Ergon Refining was a new tool firefighters used for the first time. Foam is used to smother a hydrocarbon fire where water is used to cool nearby tanks to help prevent them from catching fire, said Billy Stribling, Ergon Refining environmental safety and security manager. “It was a practice drill that went really well,” said VFD Deputy Chief Mark Ettinger.
