Meeting Monday in the absence of Mayor Laurence Leyens, the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen:

* Rejected a bid from nexAir of Pearl for two bulk liquid carbon dioxide tanks and 30 tons of carbon dioxide. The company had bid $4,690 per month, but Purchasing Director Tim Smith said a fixed price commitment was required.

* Removed Reatha Crear as an alternate election commissioner. South Ward Aldermen Sid Beauman said new state rules do not allow for alternates.

* Approved a proposal from Donald Oakes and Jim Moore to provide technical support and training services for the municipal elections. They are to be paid $35 per hour for services, not to exceed $17,500.

* Gave Director of Buildings and Inspections Victor Gray-Lewis permission to cut, clean and/or demolish property at 752, 723 and 747 Johnson St., 2016 Temple St.,1042 Main St. and 616 Rawlston St. Property at 2934 Highland Ave. was granted a 60-day extension to comply with city ordinances.

* Approved a request for $1,820 from the Vicksburg Main Street Program for March advertising.

* Approved a request from St. James No. 1 M.B. Church to close the corner of Jefferson and Adams streets and the corner of Mundy and Adams streets on March 22 from 2 until 6 p.m. to celebrate their pastor’s anniversary.  

* Approved a request from J. Allen Derivaux Jr. for assistance from the police department to control traffic and partially close one lane of traffic on Frontage Road and Clay Street, from the Vicksburg National Military Park entrance to Battlefield Inn, during the Run Thru History on Saturday.

*Approved an invoice from the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport for $3,056.67.

In closed session, the board:

* Approved hiring five people for a work-study program, including two in the parks and recreation department, two in vehicle maintenance and one in landscaping.

* Approved one job status change in the information technology department.

* Discussed one personnel matter in the water department.

The next board meeting will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in room 109 of the City Hall Annex, 1415 Walnut St.
