Odis M. Gunn

TALLULAH — Funeral services for Odis M. Gunn, age 83, of Tallulah will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Tallulah with the Rev. John W. Rushing officiating. Burial will follow at Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home.

Visitation will be at the church from noon until 2 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Gunn was born in Urania, La., and was a resident of Tallulah since 1955. He was a retired project engineer for the Louisiana Department of Highways. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Urania.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 100 Scott-Nichols Volk, where he served as post commander and adjutant for many years. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 308.

Mr. Gunn was a machine gun crewman with the 5th Marine Division in the battle of Iwo Jima in World War II and was wounded twice in action in the Pacific Theatre. He also served in the occupation of Japan as a military policeman. He earned a Purple Heart.

Mr. Gunn is survived by his wife, Doris Parker Gunn of Tallulah; two sons, Gary Gunn and wife Becky of Tallulah and Keith Gunn and wife Kathy of  Vinton, La.; three grandchildren, Brandi Gunn and April Jones, both of Tallulah, and Michael Gunn of Vinton; three sisters, Ernestine Compton of West Lake, La., and Evelyn Gunn and Kathy Franklin, both of Urania; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be Tracy Baur, Ryman Busby, Tommy Dunning, Douglas Fautheree, Lance Ferguson and Eugene Herron.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. L.F. Chenier, Dr. L.P. Neumann Jr., Dr. T.A. Neumann, Dr. E. Wade Brown, Sheldon Baker, Jason Noland and Hollis Ervin.
