A man was in fair condition at River Region Medical Center Saturday evening after being shot five times in the arm, legs and back in the Jackson Lane area of Kings Community, police said.

Vicksburg Police Investigator Ken Smith said police were still investigating the shooting of Shawn Russell, 32, unknown address, which occurred around 2 p.m.

Smith said no arrests had been made and they had no suspects by Saturday night. However, a woman was being interviewed who may have been with Russell when the shooting occurred.

“Right now we’re not sure what her involvement is, and we can’t say if she was there or not” when Russell was shot, Smith said. “We’re talking with the victim and her to try to figure out what occurred.”

Officers located the woman at Auto Zone on Clay Street following the shooting, and she was taken in for questioning.

Lt. Davey Barnette said Russell had walked to the area of Browns Alley — about six blocks away — after being shot. There residents called an ambulance and remained at his side until he was taken to the hospital.

The shooting initially was called in as a hunting accident, but Barnette said it “was definitely not a hunting accident.”

Barnette declined to comment on whether the gun was recovered, citing the ongoing investigation.
