The Vicksburg Swim Association’s annual meet is named for the Stamm family, who for years helped build the sport in the city.

The Mississippi Makos are just making it their own.

The Makos, a team based in Jackson, won 45 of 57 events in Saturday’s long-course portion of the Stamm Invitational to take a commanding lead in the team standings heading into the last day of the meet today. The Makos won 256 of a possible 392 points on the boys’ side, and 279 of a possible 365 points in the girls’ meet.

The Makos’ boys’ team leads second-place Sunkist Swim Team 514-110, while the girls’ team is ahead of Sunkist 612-141. The boys’ VSA squad is in fourth place, with 108 points, while the girls’ team is in third with 77 points.

Among the VSA swimmers, Cicily Chiarito was second in the girls’ 200 meter backstroke and third in the 100 meter butterfly, while Emily Sluis was third in the 100 meter breaststroke. The 12-and-under 200 meter freestyle relay team of Katie Martin, Afton Wallace, Mya Chappell and Blaine Butler also finished third.

The Makos also dominated the short-course meet for younger swimmers, beating Lagold 354-78 on the boys’ side, and the VSA team 389-85 in the girls’ meet.

Both VSA teams turned in strong efforts on Saturday. Mallory Claire Dickey and Tommy Martin each had four top-three finishes in the girls and boys’ 8-and-under divisions, respectively, and Conner Clark was second in the boys’ 8-and-under 50 meter backstroke.

The meet concludes today at 9 a.m., with another day of long-course events at City Pool. Admission to the meet is free.
