Respect must be taught

I would like to comment on Mayor Paul Winfield’s answers to the patrons of the Vicksburg Senior Center who asked whether an ordinance could outlaw saggy britches.

Mayor Winfield stated wearing saggy pants is protected under the First Amendment. He said if you see skin, you can call police; however, when the police arrive, the person will be gone.

If a child wants to express himself, encourage him to get an education. Teachers have enough to do rather than debate a student who may say it’s his right to wear saggy pants after the teacher tells the student to pull up his pants.

Are saggy britches artistic? No. Vulgar? Yes. No one wants to see teens grabbing their crotches to keep their pants up. An ordinance should be passed with a warning after the first offense, a $100 fine after the second offense and three days in jail after the third.

Our religious leaders should continue to talk to their members about problems with our youths and encourage participation in promoting education and self-esteem in our young people at home.

Out youths are our future. How can they lead if we don’t teach them how to follow a good example?
