No sense trying to make sense of the senseless

Here’s what was missing from reports of arson, vandalism and theft at three local schools last week: No administrators attempted to explain or rationalize the incidents.

It’s a good thing, too. There is no justification for such acts. By definition, they are “wanton,” which means devoid of reason or explanation. So it speaks well of the administrators that they didn’t try.

The fire in a storage building at Warren Central High School was discovered after it burned itself out. No doubt, a state fire inspector said, it was purposely set. The principal’s car was also damaged.

Vandals broke into Vicksburg High School, broke windows and discharged a couple of fire extinguishers.

At Porters Chapel Academy, the miscreants went a step beyond, taking cash and a television in addition to breaking glass and scrawling on a classroom whiteboard.

We’re confident police and school officials will deal with the offenders appropriately, if they’re caught — and they almost always are.

PCA Headmaster Doug Branning made an important point, which would likely be echoed at Warren Central and Vicksburg High. The acts were viewed by their student bodies as stupid, annoying, disruptive and infantile.

“They were pretty put out by it, just like I was,” Branning said of those whose class day was delayed by police taking photos and gathering evidence.

So hurray for the young folks, and vandals be warned: Not even other young people can make sense of senseless acts.
