A woman and four juveniles were involved in a Tuesday wreck on Culkin Road that sent all five to the hospital.
Betty Bishop, 63, 2000 Thompson Lake Road, was headed north on Culkin in a 2002 Ford Explorer when her vehicle was struck “nearly head on” in front of the Culkin Elementary building by a southbound 2001 Mazda Millenia driven by Christin E. Koestler, 16, 118 Woodland Drive, Sheriff Martin Pace said.
The accident occurred in Bishop’s lane, according to Deputy John Elfer, who was at the scene of the collision. He said speed did not appear to be a factor, but the investigation was continuing.
Pace said Koestler had three passengers: Justin Henke, 16, 8383 Oak Ridge Road; Clay Thrash, 16, 4770 Oak Ridge; and Kayla Truesdale, 14, 140 Windham Drive.
All five people were taken to River Region Medical Center for evaluation, Pace said. River Region did not return calls requesting condition reports.
Separately, a Vicksburg woman was injured in a two-car wreck at 10:52 a.m. on China Grove and Nine Mile Cut-Off roads, and the other driver was charged.
Alura Barnes, 24, 525 Dabney Ave., also was taken to River Region, and the hospital again did not return a call for a condition report.
Barnes was a passenger in a car driven by an unidentified man who fled on foot after the crash, Pace said.
Pace said the driver of the second car, Terry Robert Gilbreath, 62, 4711 Bernard Drive, was charged with driving under the influence, but was not injured. Gilbreath was driving a 1999 Mercedes Benz.
