* Directed board attorney Randy Sherard to pursue whether the county can remove part of an unused rail trestle over Glass Road.

The 9-foot trestle has been an impediment to ambulances and other large vehicles for decades. It figured prominently in a months-long legal battle last year over the fate of more than 4 miles of railroad right of way to the north of the structure. County crews dismantled partially, then backed off when supervisors learned of a rail abandonment proceeding under way that included the trestle.

Vicksburg officials have said the trestle belongs to the city as a result of a right of way purchase from Kansas City Southern Railway. A letter from the City Clerk’s Office in October notified the county it had an easement across the property and that any fees owed should be paid to the city.

District 4 Supervisor Bill Lauderdale, who ordered the demolition within weeks of taking office last year, has pursued taking out only support piers in the center of the road that hinder ambulances. In his motion Monday, he advised Sherard to undertake “whatever legal work is necessary.”

* Approved final plats for Boy Scout subdivision and The Trace subdivision, part 1. Preliminary plats were OK’d for minor subdivisions on Douglas Road and just north of Oak Ridge Road.

* Approved Patricia J. Mills as operations officer in the Emergency Management Agency and John Carter as code enforcement officer in the Road Department.

* Approved a $2,012,693.06 check to Trustmark National Bank for payment on a tax anticipation note taken out by the county in November. The county borrowed up to $3.3 million to cover shortages in the general, bond and interest and bridge and culvert funds.

Also, the board approved payback of a $21,191.03 loan that had moved money from the drug court fund to the general fund.

* Approved separate $100 advertisements for the Mississippi Association of Supervisors convention magazine issue and for the Elks Club Fidelity Lodge  No. 507 state convention June 12-17 in Vicksburg.
