Early-morning school traffic was backed up for nearly an hour this morning along Mississippi 27 as officials attempted to clear a four-car pileup that injured two people.
The wreck at the north-south highway and Paxton Road was reported at about 7:30. The intersection is less than a mile from Warren Central High School, Beechwood Elementary and Hinds Community College.
Injured were Caley Branning, 16, 118 Robert E. Lee Blvd., and Shaunja Patrick, 17, 105 James Court. Both were taken to River Region Medical Center, Branning was being treated in the emergency room and Patrick was treated and released, a spokesman for the hospital said later this morning.
Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Trooper Wayne Smith said the wreck happened after traffic was stopped a school bus, which was stopped on the highway. A 2005 Ford Mustang driven by Branning hit the last car in the line of stopped traffic, he said, causing a chain reaction.
The Ford hit a 1999 Buick Century driven by Jane Leist, 41, 4407 Lee Road. Her car hit a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass driven by Patrick. Her car hit a 2007 Toyota Tacoma driven by Josie Williams, 54, 206 Second Ave.
The other drivers and passengers in Patrick’s and Leist’s cars were not reported injured.
