Work continues on erosion near Washington

Kanza Construction workers  begin to lay a foundation for a $434,917 slope stabilization project off Washington Street, near the closed bridge over the railroad tracks at Clark Street. Vicksburg Public Works Director Bubba Rainer estimates 12,500 yards of dirt will be needed to fill in the gulch once the foundation is complete. The city declared the eroding slope an emergency March 31. Crews will work 10 hours a day, seven days a week, said Rainer, and hope to be finished in 30 days, weather permitting. The bridge has been closed since Jan. 23. The bridge could remain shut down through the summer of 2010. Traffic on the main north-south city corridor is being detoured through City Park.
