Porters Chapel is settling into a serious groove.

Joe Borrello and Reed Gordon both doubled and drove in two runs, and the Eagles jumped on Central Hinds for nine runs in the first two innings Tuesday en route to a 13-3 thrashing of the Cougars.

It was the Eagles’ fifth game in six days, and they’ve won four of those. In all of the wins, they’ve scored at least 10 runs.

“We played four games in the last five days, and that’s helped a lot,” said Borrello, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. “It feels like we’re starting to put the pieces together and come together as a baseball team.”

PCA (9-5, 5-1 District 5-A) still has some kinks to work out, though, like its shaky fielding. The Eagles committed three errors and uncorked a wild pitch in the top of the first to spot Central Hinds (4-7, 4-3) a 1-0 lead. They got that back within the first three batters in their half of the inning, as Clayton Holmes singled and scored on Borrello’s double.

Borrello then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Josh Hill, and Hill came in on a double steal to make it 3-1. The Eagles then blew the game open with a six-run rally in the second inning.

The first four batters all reached base safely, and an RBI single by Borrello capped things off. Matthew Warren also had an RBI double in the inning, and Holmes drove in a run with a single. PCA stole five bases in the inning, and eight in the game.

“Solid day. I thought we swung the bats well and ran the bases well. Our baserunning was the difference in the game,” PCA coach Randy Wright said.

Borrello eventually scored on an error to put the Eagles ahead 9-1 and they cruised from there. They added a single run in the fourth inning, and three in the fifth to end it by the mercy rule. Gordon’s two-run double finished the game.

“We got that one run off the bat and they came back with three, and I was thinking we were still in good shape,” Central Hinds coach Todd Montgomery said.
