Q: My neighbor has a large business sign in front of his house. It looks awful. Do you think my neighbor is conducting good business or is a shameless marketer? — Bad Sign of the Times
A: This person’s behavior reminds me of a quote from Marshall McLuhan: “The modern Little Red Riding Hood, reared on singing commercials, has no objection to being eaten by the wolf.” There is such a thing as good taste in business, but this is bad taste. A residential area is not the place to advertise business. Check to see if your neighborhood has a covenant that includes inappropriate signage. Or check community laws on such things. Or meet with the person and tell him the sign is inappropriate. As a last recourse, talk to an elected official who can put some teeth into your requests. After all, you are potential voters.
