Young swimmers shine at VSA meet|Swimming

Buoyed by another strong effort from its younger swimmers, the Vicksburg Swim Association cruised home to third-place team finish Sunday at the Stamm Family Invitational at City Pool.

Mallory Claire Dickey won three events  in the girls’ 8-and-under division — the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke and 50 meter breaststroke. Tommy Martin posted two second-place finishes and two thirds. Conner Clark also placed second in the 8-and-under 50 meter freestyle.

Wally Wibowo was second in the boys’ 13-14-year-olds’ 50 meter freestyle, and Matt Shoenberger was third in the 50 free in the boys division, which is for swimmers ages 16 and up. Emily Sluis was third in the girls 200 meter breaststroke.

The VSA squad totaled 350 points between its boys and girls teams, good for third place overall. The Mississippi Makos, a team based in Jackson and coached in part by Vicksburg native Lauri Stamm Collins, amassed 2,062 points in the three-day meet and crushed the field. Sunkist, another Jackson-based squad, was a distant second with 443 points.
