Ethel Valerie Wall Campbell Mills

BROOKHAVEN — Ethel Valerie Wall Campbell Mills, 92, died after a long illness, surrounded by her family, Sept. 22, 2009, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. Visitation is Thursday, Sept. 24, from noon until 3 at Faith Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven. Services are at 3 p.m. Thursday at Faith Presbyterian Church with burial at Rosehill Cemetery. Brookhaven Funeral Home in Brookhaven is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Mills, a lifelong native of Brookhaven, was the daughter of Brookhaven banker and attorney Hugh Vernon Wall, and church organist, Ethel Pitts Wall. She attended Judson College and was a graduate of Louisiana State University and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was married to Brookhaven businessman and former mayor Jewel Hilton Campbell. She has three daughters, Valerie, Melanie and Sylvia. Following the death of Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Mills married Fulton S. Mills, a Brookhaven native and Jackson civil engineer.
Her first love was her three daughters to whom she was a devoted mother. A large portion of Mrs. Mills’ life was devoted to the leadership of the State Bank and Trust Company, where she served on the board of directors for over 40 years. She served as president of the Climbers Club and Matinee Musicale and served as regent of the Ole Brook Chapter of D.A.R. Her love of music, acquired from her mother, was widespread among Brookhaven’s churches and arts organizations. She was a soloist and choir member at the First Baptist Church of Brookhaven, Faith Presbyterian Church and soloist for High Holy Day services at B’nai Shalom Synagogue. She was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Valerie Hall of Brookhaven, Melanie Thomas of Vicksburg and Sylvia Hall of Ridgeland; sons-in-law, Dr. James Hall and Dr. Charles Hall; and grandchildren, Valerie Hall, Madeleine Hall, Sam Hall, Campbell Engle, Granville Engle, Michael Engle, Sylvia Hall and Carolina Hall. She also leaves behind her long-time and devoted caregiver and friend, Ms. Hattie Cowart.
