On behalf of the board of directors of the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation, I would like to thank our generous sponsors and volunteers for making the 7th Annual Mardi Gras Ball a tremendous success. Special thanks to our sponsors: Dorethea “Charlie” Gholson, Ashville Hardware, Paper Plus, Trustmark National Bank, Vicksburg Main Street, Merritt and Debi Aden, BancorpSouth, David and Lara Clement, Helen Abraham Catering, The Heritage Group, Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, Ameristar Casino, Rainbow Casino, Southern Beverage, Goldie’s Express, Rowdy’s, Palmertree Catering and The Vicksburg Post.

Events such as this take a tremendous number of volunteer hours before, during and after the event. We are particularly grateful for the donations of time and talent by Charlie Gholson, Ronnie Bounds, David Clement, Denny Allman, Lenore Barkley, Helen Abraham, Beth Brown, Annette Kirklin, Dennis and Denise Garner, Sissy and Dalton McCarty, Minor Ferris and especially Abbie Bell and the Mardi Gras Queen herself, Alice Hebler.

Once again, thank you to all those who participated in making this not only a great celebration of Mardi Gras, but a great fund-raiser for the Foundation, in its efforts to identify, preserve, and protect Vicksburg’s unique architectural heritage. We look forward to Mardi Gras 2010!

Hunt well-attended

Three Rivers Coon Hunters Association would like to thank Vicksburg and surrounding communities for their support during our planning and then the four-day weekend of the 62nd Annual ACHA World Championship Hunt. Pancakes plentiful

The Christ Episcopal Church pancake supper on Feb. 24 was a wonderful success. As usual, the proceeds of this event benefit many community programs through our outreach efforts.

As chairperson of this year’s supper, I would like to thank everyone for their support in buying tickets and donating supplies. I offer special thanks to the community for joining us in the night’s fellowship and to all the volunteers who worked endlessly to make the event successful.

We look forward to next year’s supper on Shrove Tuesday.

Good neighbors, mostly

Wednesday afternoon, just inside Walgreens, what my friend and I thought was a young boy leaned across me as I was strapping my purse into my cart, took my purse and ran off with it, which started a series of events. First horror, then anger.

The police were called and arrived in mere minutes. Thanks to the work of Vicksburg Police Officer Curtis Judge, the entire event was handled judiciously. Vicksburg can be proud of him.

(Whoever the off-duty officer who came into Walgreens — be he firefighter or police officer — and said to me, “I’m off duty, sorry,” I agree. You are sorry.)

When Mr. Judge was through getting our information, I returned home, cancelling all cards, etc. Within hours, I received calls from Bobby Huell, saying that my checkbook was laying in his driveway. Shortly after that Rev. Foley (who does God’s work with children who need extra help) called and reported my purse was thrown in his vicinity. Directly after that Mr. and Ms. Emmet Atwood called and their yard man had found my wallet on Wisconsin Avenue.

Citizens of Vicksburg, thank you! Losing $42 was a small price to pay to learn of the good that our fair city has in it. The good deeds saved us from a lot of hard work in replacing ID’s, licenses, and etc.

This just makes us all know that we should be more aware of our surroundings. I never fail to tie my purse into the child’s restraining seat, and within 30 more seconds I would have had it done!
