Oak seedlings offered to state’s landowners

Native oak seedlings are available to landowners at a reduced cost through Mississippi’s Acorns for Wildlife Initiative.

The program is an effort of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Mississippi State Chapter and Greater Jackson Chapter, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

Hard mast, or nuts such as acorns, are a source of food for wildlife during the winter, but are in short supply in Mississippi.

The seedlings are available to any landowner. Orders are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be available in February.

Disaster loan cutoff Feb. 6, SBA reminds

The U.S. Small Business Administration is reminding disaster victims that Feb. 6 is the filing deadline for federal economic injury disaster loans available in Mississippi.

The SBA declared a disaster because of damages and losses to crops caused by flooding on March 1, 2008, and after.

Small businesses, and private nonprofit organizations in the following counties are eligible to apply: Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Franklin, Hinds, Jefferson, Issaquena, Lincoln, Warren, Wilkinson and Yazoo. For information, call 404-331-0333, ext. 2207.

Nursing summit set for Jan. 27 in Jackson

The American Nurses Association’s annual nursing summit is set for Jan. 27 at the Mississippi Trade Mart Center.

The event is presented by the Mississippi Nurses Association and the Mississippi Nursing Organizations Liaison Committee.

ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, a nurse since 1980, will be the opening session speaker.

Registration is $50 for MNA or organization members, $75 for nonmembers, $30 for undergraduate students and $40 for full-time graduate students. A $20 fee will be assessed for registrations made after Friday. Visit mna@msnurses.org, or call 601-898-0670.
