Grand Jury: Bank robbery suspect freed|’Pictures not clear’
Published 12:00 am Friday, May 8, 2009
The former law enforcement officer charged with a bank heist here based on video evidence is a free man, having been no-billed by Warren County grand jurors.
“The pictures were not clear at all,” said District Attorney Ricky Smith as the jurors, empaneled Monday, ended their deliberations.
Charged was Timothy Gandy, 42, a Hattiesburg resident. He had been accused of the Dec. 18 robbery of the BancorpSouth branch on South Frontage Road near Indiana Avenue.
Smith said still photos made from the video images were part of the evidence the grand jury reviewed. “In addition, the grand jury heard that Gandy had provided a credible alibi,” Smith added.
No employees or customers at BancorpSouth were injured in the robbery, in which a man, apparently still at large, produced a handgun and demanded cash from the teller, then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Based on the images, Gandy was arrested Dec. 19 by Hattiesburg police, brought to Vicksburg several days later for his initial hearing and later released on $100,000 bond.
At the time of his arrest Gandy also was believed to have robbed a BancorpSouth branch in Hattiesburg the day before the Vicksburg robbery, but Doug Miller, assistant district attorney in the Lamar County District Attorney’s Office said he had no information on Gandy ever having been charged with that holdup.
Gandy was with the Biloxi Police Department when Tommy Moffett, Vicksburg’s seven-year chief, was police chief there. Gandy had also worked for the Jackson police and the Jefferson Parish (La.) Sheriff’s Office.
