Meet Kenny and Kenly Ellerbe, whose K-n-K Farms at Bovina are producing summer vegetables par excellence: tomatoes, squash, eggplants, watermelons and cantaloupe, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet corn and, coming in July, purple-hull and pink-eye peas, butterbeans, okra and bell peppers.
About the Ellerbe team
Vicksburg native Kenny Ellerbe was born and raised in Vicksburg, but moved to Texas in the seventies. He returned to Vicksburg several years ago and opened a small construction company.
Kenly Ellerbe, who is from central Texas, followed her husband soon after her son graduated from high school. She stays busy raising Agile Border Collies and writing medical transcripts for a Texas cardiologist in addition to her farm chores.
The Ellerbes’ farm is 9.5 acres, and they first planted a meager two acres of sweet corn. But that prompted a real interest in growing a mixture of vegetables, something different from just corn and cotton. And that began what is today some four acres of the most beautiful, neatly grouped and planted vegetables I have ever seen.
The couple wholesales to restaurants and grocery stores in the area, and they bring a big selection of fresh vegetables to the Farmers’ Market for purchase. You won’t want to miss the Market each week of the summer for all your veggie needs.
