Vicksburg man hospitalized in shooting

A Vicksburg man who shot at a 94-year-old man was hospitalized this morning after being shot in the chest when the elderly man returned fire.

Larry Porter, 50, was shot at about 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Spouts Spring Road, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

Witnesses told police that a bullet struck Porter in the chest after he fired two shots at the 94-year-old and the man returned fire.

“He was not arrested. This case will go before the grand jury to see if there are charges,” Williams said of the 94-year-old.

Porter drove himself to River Region Medical Center before being taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

He was listed in good condition this morning, UMMC spokesman Gary Pettus said.

 

Two city men held in robbery

Two Vicksburg men accused of robbing store clerks of a night deposit were held without bail this morning.

Willie Miles, 30, who lives on Farmer Street, and Garrion McCullough, 23, who lives on Court Street, were charged at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with robbery, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

The duo are accused of robbing two clerks from Shoe Show, 2182 Iowa Blvd., as the clerks were leaving at about 9:30 p.m. April 3 to make a night deposit.

The suspects were identified though an investigation by VPD investigator John Nguyen, Williams said.

Miles was held in the Warren County Jail this morning and held at police headquarters. Both are scheduled to make an initial appearance Friday in Vicksburg Municipal Court.

 

Accused embezzler charged

A Vicksburg man accused of stealing more than $25,000 from his employer was held without bail this morning.

Christopher Stewart, 31, who lives on Broadhill Drive, was arrested at 5 p.m. Wednesday and charged with embezzlement, Vicksburg police Lt. Sandra Williams said.

Stewart is accused of stealing the cash from Garfield’s Restaurant at Vicksburg Mall where he was employed, she said.

He was held without bail this morning in the Issaquena County Correctional Facility.

 

Threat at VHS unsubstantiated

An unspecified threat to Vicksburg High School Wednesday morning that brought Vicksburg Police Department officers to campus was unsubstantiated.

At about 10 a.m., a threat was reported to 911 and Vicksburg Police Department officers could be seen on campus.

David Campbell, assistant superintendent of the Vicksburg Warren School District, said the threat was not credible and highlighted a swift response from the Vicksburg Police Department and the district’s school resource officers.

“There was no threat,” he said. “The school administrator followed the procedures and policies well and our local authorities responded swiftly.”
