Achievements

• John Johnson, assistant principal at Vicksburg Junior High, is the American Legion Post 213 Educator of the Year. A Morton native, he has been with the Vicksburg Warren School District for seven years. He has a bachelor’s degree in English, pre-law, from Tougaloo, a master’s degree in education administration from Jackson State and is pursuing a doctorate. He and his wife, Vanessa, have one daughter.

• Katie Ross, a University of Southern Mississippi senior political science major from Vicksburg, is the Student Government Association’s co-coordinator of USM’s homecoming celebration. She was the 2008-2009 Miss USM Pageant student director and was treasurer and vice president of Chi Omega sorority. Her parents are James and Mickey Ross.

• Firefighters Julian J. Tolliver, Patrick J. Webb, Courtney S. Reed and Tavares R. Hatchett of the Vicksburg Fire Department have graduated from the National Fire Protection Association’s 1001 Firefighter course at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson. The course was six weeks.

• Maurice Brooks of Vicksburg has graduated from the Mississippi Delta Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy.

• Local 4-H students who won awards for projects entered at the Mississippi State Fair were Elizabeth Holloway, Culinary Arts; Ernest Miller, Creative Arts & Environmental; Ethan Welch, Creative Arts; Gabrielle Hartley, Creative Arts; Genna Wall, Creative Arts; Danielle Holloway, Creative Arts; Savannah Thomas, Creative Arts; John Whitehead, Culinary Arts & Safety & Health; Hannah Miller, Creative Arts, Culinary Arts & Environmental; Kaylae Hartley, Creative Arts & Safety & Health; Shiloh Roberts, Creative Arts, Environmental, Safety & Health; Andrew Hearn, Environmental; Larry Vines, Creative Arts & Environmental; and Jackson Vines, Creative Arts & Environmental. Rachael Roberts, Blake Hartley and Nathaniel Welch received a green ribbon for their exhibits in Creative Arts. 

Greek

• Rachel Clarke, daughter of Doug and Joan Clarke, and Mary Quinn DeRossette, daughter of Tim and Lucy DeRossette, have pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority at Mississippi State University.

Honors

• Charlie Tubbs III, a Warren Central graduate, is on the dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. He is pursuing a business administration degree with a psychology minor. He is the son of Charlie Jr. and Carolyn Tubbs.

• Morgan Lane Gruenther of Vicksburg is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda leadership and honor society at Mississippi State University.

• Jarvis Jonta Jones of Vicksburg  is part of Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s  Eta Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
