Marlin Elmo Ellis died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at his home.  He was 83.

Born in Attala County, Mr. Ellis lived in Vicksburg most of his life. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II.

He worked for Standard Oil Co., was a welder and machinist at Levee Street Foundry and performed carpentry and brazing during construction of Vicksburg’s flood walls. He later worked for the International Teamsters Union, driving for Gordon‘s, Miller’s Transit, Complete Auto Transit and Red Ball.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Everette Ellis; his mother, Estelle Steed Ellis; his wife, Maggie Louise May Ellis; and three brothers, Louie Ellis, Elsi Ellis and Elra Ellis.

He is survived by two sons, Philip Marlin Ellis of Magee and Mitchell Edwin Ellis of Vicksburg; two brothers, James Marzene Ellis of Alaska and Billy Earl Ellis of Vicksburg; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bowmar Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, the American Heart Association or Bowmar Baptist Church Building Fund.
