“We want to get the message to core groups,” said Anna Booth, director of City of Vicksburg Emergency Planning. The meeting will be at the Vicksburg Senior Center, 801 South St., at 3 p.m.

No cases of swine flu have been reported in Mississippi.

Separately, Vicksburg Warren School District was stepping up to act.

“We are trying to be proactive in our efforts,” said Cindy Nash, head nursing coordinato.

Nash said she sent memos on safety tips to each of the district’s 13 schools earlier this week.

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Hank Bounds is to hold a press conference and webinar at 2:30 p.m. today to discuss the potential outbreak in Mississippi schools.

Nash said there is no need to worry about an outbreak or any school cancellations, but school officials are taking the necessary precautions to deal with the issue.

At River Region Medical Center, hospital officials have heightened their awareness of the swine flu and, just like all other hospitals, have policies and processes in place to counter a pandemic flu outbreak, said Diane Gawronski, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at River Region Health System.

“We have heightened our awareness as it relates to swine flu,” Gawronski said.
