Trustmark robber’s sentencing put on hold

Sentencing was delayed indefinitely Friday for convicted bank robber Kevin Dale McCain.
McCain, 50, of Petal, was found guilty by a jury Sept. 15 after a two-day trial.
He was originally scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 2 by presiding Circuit Court Judge Isadore Patrick. A hearing was held instead after District Attorney Ricky Smith asked Patrick to sentence McCain as a “habitual offender.”
The designation could mean life in prison for McCain, who Smith said has four previous bank robbery convictions. He otherwise faces 15 years in prison.
After the Oct. 2 hearing Patrick continued the sentencing until Friday, but it was delayed again due to the court waiting for receipt of certified records from the federal Bureau of Prisons.
Smith said the final sentencing date is still to be decided.
McCain was convicted of the Jan. 30, 2008, robbery of the Trustmark Bank at 3406 Halls Ferry Road. He was on federal probation for a previous bank robbery conviction when arrested for the Trustmark robbery, and was implicated in robberies in Texas and Louisiana Jan. 25 and 28, 2008.
Also in Warren County Circuit Court during the week ending Friday:
• Colton Q. Branning, 18, 118 Robert E. Lee Blvd., pleaded guilty to auto burglary and was sentenced by Patrick to three years in prison, followed by four years of probation, plus $322.50 in court costs. Branning was arrested June 30.
In Sharkey County Circuit Court:
• Curtis Lewis, 28, address unavailable, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault-domestic violence and was sentenced by Patrick to 137 days in jail, followed by five years of probation, plus $1,822.50 in fines and costs. Lewis was arrested May 23.
