A Warren County Jail inmate is being sought after escaping from the jail Saturday evening.
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said his office is looking for jail trusty Eugene Lewis Jr., 22, 1900 Baldwin Ferry Road, who had been arrested in March for credit card fraud and residential burglary.
Pace said it appeared Lewis left the kitchen, where he was assigned to work that evening, went downstairs to the basement and left through a garage door.
Pace said the doors are normally kept locked, but was unlocked for trusties to take meal trays from the second floor to the bottom floor.
Lewis had been in the county jail since March 11 under indictment for a county residential burglary and credit card fraud charges for county and city, Pace said.
Pace said trusties are allowed out of their cells for assigned tasks within the jail and Lewis had been a trusty since Sept. 1.
Pace said Lewis was allowed to be a trusty despite an attempt to escape during his initial arrest, for which he was charged with felony escape by the city, Sgt. Sandra Williams of the Vicksburg Police Department said this morning.
Pace said he was a trusty because of a shortage of eligible inmates.
He said the jail staff is reviewing policies and surveillance equipment.
Pace said he does not believe Lewis is armed or a danger to the public.
He also said if anyone has information in the case to call the Mississippi Crime Stoppers at 1-866-481-8477 or 601-355-8477.
Callers with information might receive a $1,000 cash reward.
