Warren County has received $13,916.05 in property taxes from Winn-Dixie Stores via its bankruptcy reorganization.
Warren was among 12 Mississippi counties and more than 70 local governments in the nation who protested the grocery chain’s attempt to get back more than $1.4 million in taxes. Overall, 2,621 parties filed court papers seeking to protect funds Winn-Dixie sought to recoup.
Winn-Dixie, which operated Sack ’n’ Save on South Frontage Road in Vicksburg until it closed in August 2005, sought to have assessments made in 2004 and 2005 rolled back as part of its Chapter 11 filing four months earlier. Funds Warren County sought to protect involved two personal property parcels.
Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie emerged from bankruptcy in November 2006. In 2008, the Vicksburg property was redeveloped into Medical Associates of Vicksburg.
