Week in Vicksburg

A week of clear skies and moderate temperatures has gone into the record book. Outer bands of Hurricane Ida resulted in blustery winds, but no rain was recorded. Lows ranged from 40 degrees to 61 and highs ranged from 65 degrees to 77.

The Mississippi River rose on the Vicksburg gauge for five days before cresting and starting a slow fall. The gauge started at 38.8 feet, topped out at 40.2 feet and was to be at 39.3 feet today.

Many friendships were rekindled at a reunion of former students of All Saints’ Episcopal School. More than 500 alumni and former faculty from all across the nation attended two days of events.

Dornisha Erves, daughter of Donald and Dorothy Erves, was crowned homecoming queen at Warren Central High School.

Yokena Presbyterian Church, which once had as few as five members and has grown to 17, marked its 125th anniversary.

Warren Central won its final regular season game, defeating Grenada 20-7 and advancing to playoffs. Vicksburg High fell to Clinton, Porters Chapel to Sylva Bay and St. Aloysius to Sebastapol.

The new book by Vicksburg native William “Bill” Ferris, “Give My Poor Heart Ease,” was reviewed. Ferris, a folklorist, said musicians around his hometown inspired his life’s work as a folklorist.

This year’s Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary ornament was unveiled. It bears a post-Katrina image created by artist H.C. Porter.

Police announced the arrest of Tyler Lee Smith, 51, 3112 N. Washington, on capital murder charges. Smith may face execution for robbing and killing retired Assistant Police Chief Walter Cole, who was 75, on July 23, 2008.

The largest alligator killed during Mississippi’s limited hunt on private land was taken in Warren County. It was 12 feet, 9 inches long.

Veterans Day events included unveiling the first new monument in the Municipal Rose Garden in 20 years. The red stone monument honors all Purple Heart medal recipients.

Two public and one private high schools were visited by vandals and thieves. A fire was set in a storage building at Warren Central, fire extinquishers were discharged inside Vicksburg High and cash and a television were stolen from Porters Chapel.

Eugene Durman was named Retired Educator of the Year for the second time by the organization composed of his fellow former educators.

Distress warrants have been served to delinquent property tax debtors, but supervisors said they want the sheriff’s department to do more to collect money still owed.

After a civil trial, jurors awarded $7.6 million for a Vicksburg man, Robert Eastman, 67. His attorneys said their client developed silicosis, a lung disease, while working at Marathon-LeTourneau.

An employee opening Yasky ATV Accessories on Wisconsin Avenue early in the morning reported he was robbed of $800 in cash by two armed men.

Deaths during the week included Margie Faye Furr, Steven Wayne May, George Carter Buford, Michael Edward Geary and Gordon Lyndal “Motor” Carr.
