Even though they’ve faded from the Southern League pennant chase, the Mississippi Braves are still finding ways to provide excitement.
Back-to-back RBI doubles by Travis Jones and Phillip Britton in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday gave the M-Braves a 5-4 win over the Montgomery Biscuits at Trustmark Park.
It was the fourth time in five games that the M-Braves have played a game decided by one run, with the go-ahead run coming in the winning team’s final at-bat.
This finish was set up by a big sixth inning for Montgomery. Trailing 2-1 with the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Nowak drove a two-out double to center to clear the bases and put the Biscuits ahead 4-2. A sacrifice fly by Greg Creek in the bottom of the sixth cut the deficit to one run, and the M-Braves took the lead for good in the eighth. Eric Campbell walked and scored from first on Jones’ two-out double to right to tie the game. Britton followed with another double to right to make it 5-4, and the Biscuits went down quietly in the ninth.
Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the M-Braves, while Port Gibson native J.T. Hall was 2-for-4 with a double for Montgomery.
