Police were searching for a man accused of robbing the main branch of Trustmark National Bank on Friday afternoon.

Police responded to the scene about 2:05 p.m. after a man wearing a light brown, hooded sweatshirt and a blue baseball cap approached a teller at the Washington Street branch and showed a note demanding money, Vicksburg police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

He was given an undisclosed amount of cash from the teller’s drawer, Stewart said.

“There was no indication of a weapon,” Stewart said. “The man was in the bank for about two minutes total and then fled out the Washington Street door.” The bank is at Washington and Clay streets.

Witnesses told police Friday evening the suspect fled on foot, west from Washington toward City Front. Stewart said the teller then called 911 and told a bank official to lock the doors.

The branch was closed for about an hour, then reopened. No one was injured, Stewart said.

The man is described as black, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 inches tall and 175 to 200 pounds.

It was the first bank robbery in Vicksburg this year. Four were reported in Vicksburg and Warren County in 2008, three of which resulted in arrests.

Trustmark operates six branches in Vicksburg.
