Vicksburg man shot in robbery attempt

A Vicksburg man remained hospitalized this morning after being shot during an attempted robbery Tuesday night.
Curlie Whiten Jr., 60, 426 Zollingers Hill, told police he had stopped his car at a stop sign on Zollingers Hill at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at about 10 p.m. when he was approached by a man who demanded money and then shot him in the left forearm, said Sgt. Sandra Williams.
Whiten drove to a Mission 66 convenience store, from which 911 was called.
A family member said he remained at River Region Medical Center this morning. A phone call to the hospital was not returned.
Jackson man jailed for felony shoplifting
A Jackson man was arrested Tuesday for felony shoplifting at Wal-Mart SuperCenter.
Miguel Jones, age and address unavailable, stole merchandise valued at more than $1,000 at 5:56 p.m., said Vicksburg Police Sgt. Sandra Williams.
He was being held without bond at the Issaquena County Jail.
Stereo, weed trimmer among missing items
Four car burglaries were reported in Vicksburg Tuesday, said Sgt. Sandra Williams of the Vicksburg Police Department.
• A Pioneer AM/FM CD player, suitcase and a 19-inch Hewlett Packard monitor, total value $518, were reported missing from a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier in the 1300 block of Walnut Street at 5:14 a.m.
• A Homelite weed trimmer valued at $50 and a 12-gauge shotgun were reported missing from a 1988 Toyota pickup at 7:09 a.m. in the 2000 block of Main Street.
• A golf club set valued at $800 was reported missing from a 2004 Ford in the 600 block of Santa Rosa Drive at 12:39 p.m.
• A Garmin navigation system and an Apple iPod, total value of $360, were reported missing from a 2007 Mazda in the 1400 block of Parkside Drive at 3:36 p.m.
