Salvation Army Auxiliary collecting soles for souls

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, February 3, 2009

The goal of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Vicksburg is to collect 40,000 pounds of shoes during February.

“Soles for Souls” aims to help those in need by selling the donated shoes to a recycling company which, in turn, will donate the usable shoes to Third World countries. The effort also keeps shoes out of landfills.

The recycling company will pay 50 cents per pound, and the goal is to raise $20,000.

The money raised will go to social services of the local Salvation Army, Mission 66 Diner and emergency responses.

“We are expecting to meet the goal,” said Phyllis Renfro, president of the Women’s Auxiliary.

The Salvation Army will accept all kinds of used, wearable shoes or boots with heels lower than 2 inches.

The shoes need to be paired and banded before being dropped off.

Collection boxes are at all Vicksburg and Warren County public and parochial schools, The Vicksburg Post lobby and the Salvation Army Thrift Store on Mission 66.
