Spotting the visiting club two runs off a pair of errors in the first inning is usually not a plan for victory.

Especially when the visitor is Madison Central.

Warren Central dug itself in a hole that the Lady Vikes could not escape as they fell 5-2 on Tuesday.

The first inning would prove to be the dealbreaker, as Lindsey Morris, who singled and Kelly Young, who reached via a walk, scored for Madison Central. Morris came in off an error, while Young ran home after a wild pitch by starter Andi Hearn.

Madison Central pushed across two more in the second, as back-to-back singles by Lindsey Rowe and Morgan Malone quick turned into runs off an RBI single by Kelsi Vandevender and an RBI groundout by Ashley Norman to put the Lady Jaguars up 4-0.

“We’ve been playing pretty solid defense lately, but we just made too many defensive errors,” WC coach Dana McGivney said. “Those first two innings killed us.”

Warren Central finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame. Mandy Fuller led off with a triple, and Kaitlyn Patton and Mallory Reynolds singled to load up the bases. Chasity Hearn took advantage, ripping a line drive triple to drive in Fuller and Patton. But Madison Central’s Morris recovered, striking out two of the next three batters she faced and inducing a routine pop-up to escape further damage.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Jaguars struck again as Courtney Purvis drove in a run off an RBI single. The Lady Vikes (1-2) got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning with two down after Sydnei Smith singled and stole second. But they couldn’t cash in as Morris struck out the next two WC batters to quell the threat.

Hearn took the loss, yielding nine hits for WC.
