Brazen thief hits Dillard’s registers

Published 12:00 am Thursday, October 1, 2009

A man walked in to a department store at Pemberton Square mall Wednesday, opened two registers, took the cash inside and walked out of the store.

Vicksburg police had no suspects in the theft at Dillard’s at about 10:30 a.m., but they have surveillance video that shows a stocky black man, about 6-foot-2, wearing a black T-shirt with illegible white lettering and black jeans, said Sgt. Sandra Williams.

Neither register appeared to be damaged, and the video showed the suspect entered the registers without using “tools” or “objects,” Williams said. Lt. Bobby Stewart said this morning it had not been determined if the man was familiar with the registers before Wednesday.

The suspect entered the store from the mall side and left through exterior doors on the west side of the building, Williams said.

While officials are unclear of the amount stolen, Williams believed it was less than $500, meaning, if caught, the suspect likely would be charged with a misdemeanor.

“He didn’t forcefully take anything from anyone,” she said.
